elbow BICEPS TENDONITIS

DEFINITION:

  • Distal biceps tendonitis is an inflammatory process affecting the biceps tendon insertion on to the radius. (See illustration).

MECHANISM OF INJURY / HOW IT OCCURS:

  • Tendonitis of the distal biceps can occur from repetitive strain and overuse, often seen is weight training. Maneuvers requiring forceful flexion of the arm, such as with biceps curls, can result in the development of inflammation and micro tearing to the tendon.

SYMPTOMS:

  • Individuals will present with the complaint of pain to the anterior (front) of the elbow region.
  • Lifting and pulling activities will exacerbate the symptoms.

DIAGNOSIS:

  • Physical examination will reveal tenderness to palpation along the biceps tendon.
  • Forceful flexion against resistance will result in increased symptoms as will forceful supination (rotating the hand and forearm upwards.

TREATMENT/REHABILITATION:

  • Rest, ice, and anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) are the initial treatment modalities.
  • Therapy to help stretch and subsequently strengthen the biceps and surrounding musculature. (See exercises for biceps tendonitis).
