foot/ankle ACHILLES TENDONITIS
DESCRIPTION:
- An inflammatory process involving the tendon attaching the calf muscles (gastrocnemius) to the heel (calcaneus). (See illustration).
MECHANISM OF INJURY / HOW IT OCCURS:
- Primarily a result of overuse seen with repetitive activities such as jumping and running.
- Also commonly seen with a sudden change or increase in training.
- Poor flexibility will make an individual prone to microscopic tearing of the tendon and the subsequent inflammatory process.
SYMPTOMS:
- Individuals present with a complaint of pain and swelling.
- Forceful “push off” type activities exacerbate their symptoms.
DIAGNOSIS:
- Physical examination demonstrates tenderness to palpation along the Achilles tendon.
- Discomfort with stretch of the tendon.
- Swelling may be present.
TREATMENT/REHABILITATION:
- Rest, ice, anti-inflammatory medications, and stretching are the main modalities used to treat this injury. The assistance of a therapist will help with the rehabilitation process. (See exercises for Achilles tendonitis).
- Proper shoe wear and possible orthotics. It is important for individuals to pay attention to the early signs and symptoms of inflammation so as to prevent a chronic problem.
